Climate action in the City of London
The City of London Corporation was the first local authority to set out its climate change adaptation plans. With a third of London’s open space and green infrastructure under its management, it’s a critical part of the corporation’s work. Simon Mills, sustainable development and environmental co-coordinator, explains the plans.
Comprehensive responses to climate change
For the 2000 Olympic Games, Sydney transformed a highly polluted post-industrial wasteland into a 425-hectare sustainable urban parkland. From an innovative water management system to the use of sustainable energy, the park offers world-class sustainable design and management.
Augustenborg was a neighbourhood in decline, but the local authority’s regeneration programme has transformed it into an exemplar of an adapted urban area. Green rooftops, renewable energy and community recycling all feature.
Inadequate drainage in Chicago’s 1,900-mile network of alleys was causing sewers to overflow in heavy rain. Through its innovative Green Alley programme, the Department of Transportation found a way of making the alleys porous, hard-wearing and highly effective.
